What strategies can be considered to improve data centre energy efficiency?

Well firstly and over all data centre strategy is very important often a data centre environment within a company will have been created over a period of time through acquisition and inheriting systems so it may well be that consolidation of data centre themselves can be considered and perhaps three larger data centres will be more efficient than 15 smaller ones for example and then within the data centre itself there are two strands to energy efficiency, firstly optimisation of the IT itself for instance virtualisation and consolidation of workloads to improve server and storage utilisation and then secondly improving power usage effectiveness levels by considering how energy efficient both the delivery of power and the usage of power by the data centre infrastructure is.

More recently, for the past 5 years, Chris has managed IBM's Data Centre design and build offerings and is an active member of the IBM Site and Facilities Community of Practise. He also received the CNET Networks Award for Green IT Initiative of the Year on behalf of IBM in 2007.

Information

Chris Scott answers questions on what is driving change in the Data Centre, why energy efficiency matters and why organisations should be balancing capital costs carefully with operational improvements.
